aggregation is one of those subjects where the details matter more than the headlines. This page pulls together the background, the mechanisms, and the practical points readers ask about most.

Reconstituted solutions are less stable than the dry powder, and stability depends on concentration, pH, buffer composition, and container material. Low-protein-binding tubes reduce loss of peptide to plastic surfaces. Some researchers add a carrier protein to limit adsorption at low concentrations. The exact shelf life of a given solution is best determined empirically through a stability study rather than assumed from general guidance, because published data cover only a limited set of conditions.
Storage conditions for semaglutide depend heavily on the presentation. Lyophilized research powder is generally kept at two to eight degrees Celsius in a sealed container, protected from light and moisture. Manufacturer labeling for finished injectable products specifies refrigeration before first use, with defined in-use periods at room temperature afterward. The oral tablet form is stored at controlled room temperature and is more tolerant of short excursions. Temperature excursions should be documented rather than inferred.
Peptide degradation follows several routes. Hydrolysis cleaves the backbone at susceptible residues, oxidation targets methionine and tryptophan side chains, and aggregation produces higher-molecular-weight species that are difficult to reverse. Light exposure accelerates oxidation, which is why amber glass or opaque secondary packaging is common. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles promote aggregation and are best avoided. Stability-indicating methods detect these changes before they become visible.
Routine characterisation of the peptide relies on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often paired with ultraviolet detection near 214 nanometres. Related substances such as deamidated, oxidised, and truncated sequences elute at characteristic positions and are quantified by area percentage. Electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry confirms the molecular mass and can resolve some closely related variants. Peptide mapping after enzymatic digestion provides sequence-level verification and is useful when a full identity profile is required. Method parameters such as column chemistry, gradient, and mobile-phase pH influence the separation and must be reported alongside results.
Material described as research-grade is not necessarily manufactured to pharmaceutical standards, and purity figures depend on the method used to obtain them. A certificate of analysis states the measured purity, the analytical technique, and the batch identifier, but the underlying data are not always included. Independent testing by a second laboratory is a common way to confirm identity and purity. Uncertainties remain about how storage history affects long-term stability, and about how well results from one laboratory transfer to another. Documentation of handling conditions supports comparison between batches.
| Property | Value | Notes |

| Purity specification (research grade) | Greater than 95 percent by HPLC | Area percent at 220 nm; method dependent |
| Identity confirmation | Mass spectrometry | Observed mass compared with theoretical |
| Residual water | Reported by Karl Fischer titration | Affects peptide content calculation |
| Common synonyms | GLP-1 analog; GLP-1 receptor agonist peptide | Naming varies across catalogs |
| Container material | Low-binding polypropylene | Reduces adsorption at low concentration |
Handling guidance for research quantities calls for single-use aliquots, an inert atmosphere where practical, and avoidance of repeated freeze-thaw cycles that accelerate aggregation. Certificates of analysis typically report purity by peak area, water content, counter-ion identity, and residual solvent levels. In the scientific literature the compound is usually described by its full amino acid sequence, its registry number, or its structural class rather than by any proprietary label. Reporting standards vary between journals, and reviewers increasingly request raw chromatograms alongside tabulated purity figures. Whether current purity thresholds are adequate for every experimental context is debated.
Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is the dominant approach for peptide purity assessment, usually paired with mass spectrometry to confirm molecular mass and sequence. Peptide mapping by enzymatic digestion and tandem mass spectrometry locates modifications such as deamidation and oxidation. Quantitation in plasma matrices can be performed by LC-MS/MS after solid-phase extraction. Method validation follows general guidance on accuracy, precision, linearity, and limits of detection. Comparability of results between laboratories, when no shared reference standard is available, remains an open question.
Quantification and purity assessment rely on separation methods coupled to optical or mass detection. Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography resolves the intact peptide from related impurities and is the standard assay technique. Size-exclusion chromatography measures aggregates, while ion-exchange chromatography separates charge variants produced by deamidation. Mass spectrometry confirms identity and detects mass shifts of a few daltons. In biological matrices, liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry is often used because immunoassays can cross-react with endogenous GLP-1 or with circulating fragments.
As a peptide, semaglutide is sensitive to conditions that break amide bonds or modify side chains. Deamidation of asparagine and glutamine residues, oxidation of methionine and tryptophan, and non-covalent aggregation are the main degradation routes described in published stability work. Rate depends strongly on pH, buffer species, ionic strength, temperature and exposure to light. Formulators therefore choose a defined solution pH and often add excipients such as phosphate buffer, propylene glycol and phenol, each of which plays a separate role in pH control, tonicity or preservation.
In November 2024, the US Food and Drug Administration approved PropofolVet Multidose, the first generic propofol injectable emulsion for dogs. PropofolVet Multidose is approved for use as an injectable anesthetic in dogs. PropofolVet Multidose contains the same active ingredient (propofol injectable emulsion) as the approved brand-name drug product, PropoFlo 28, which was first approved on 4 February 2011. In addition, the FDA determined that PropofolVet Multidose contains no inactive ingredients that may significantly affect the bioavailability of the active ingredient.
=== Initiation === Initiation involves the small subunit of the ribosome binding to the 5' end of mRNA with the help of initiation factors. The ribosome and its associated factors assemble and bind to an mRNA. The first TRNA is attached at the start codon. This process is defined as either cap-dependent, in which the ribosome binds initially at the 5' cap and then travels to the stop codon, or as cap-independent, where the ribosome does not initially bind the 5' cap. The 5' cap is added when the nascent pre-mRNA is about 20 nucleotides long.
==== Hong Kong ==== In Hong Kong, codeine is regulated under the Laws of the Hong Kong, Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, Chapter 134, Schedule 1. It can be used legally only by health professionals and for university research purposes. The substance can be given by pharmacists under a prescription. Anyone who supplies the substance without a prescription can be fined $10,000 (HKD). The maximum penalty for trafficking or manufacturing the substance is a $5,000,000 (HKD) fine and life imprisonment. Possession of the substance for consumption without license from the Department of Health is illegal with a $1,000,000 (HKD) fine and/or 7 years of jail time. However, codeine is available without prescription from licensed pharmacists in doses up to 0.1% (i.e. 5 mg/5ml)
The WHO funded work in the 1960s at the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on growing the Lister/Elstree strain in rabbit kidney cells and tested it in 45,443 Indonesian children in 1973, with comparable results to the same strain of calf lymph vaccine. Two other cell culture vaccines were developed from the Lister strain in the 2000s: Elstree-BN (Bavarian Nordic) and VV Lister CEP (Chicken Embryo Primary, Sanofi Pasteur). Lister/Elstree-RIVM was stockpiled in the Netherlands, and Elstree-BN was sold to some European countries for stockpiles. However, Sanofi dropped its own vaccine after it acquired Acambis in 2008. ACAM2000 is a vaccine developed by Acambis, which was acquired by Sanofi Pasteur in 2008, before selling the smallpox vaccine to Emergent Biosolutions in 2017. Six strains of vaccinia were isolated from 3,000 doses of Dryvax and found to exhibit significant variation in virulence. The strain with the most similar virulence to the overall Dryvax mixture was selected and grown in MRC-5 cells to make the ACAM1000 vaccine. After a successful phase I trial of ACAM1000, the virus was passaged three times in Vero cells to develop ACAM2000, which entered mass production at Baxter. The United States ordered over 200 million doses of ACAM2000 in 1999–2001 for its stockpile, and production is ongoing to replace expired vaccine. ACAM2000 was approved for mpox prevention in the United States in August 2024.

UV can be used to pasteurize fruit juices by flowing the juice over a high-intensity ultraviolet source. The effectiveness of such a process depends on the UV absorbance of the juice. Pulsed light (PL) is a technique of killing microorganisms on surfaces using pulses of an intense broad spectrum, rich in UVC between 200 and 280 nm. Pulsed light works with xenon flash lamps that can produce flashes several times per second. Disinfection robots use pulsed UV. The antimicrobial effectiveness of filtered far-UVC (222 nm) light on a range of pathogens, including bacteria and fungi showed inhibition of pathogen growth, and since it has lesser harmful effects, it provides essential insights for reliable disinfection in healthcare settings, such as hospitals and long-term care homes. UVC has also been shown to be effective at degrading SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Sweet tea, with sugar added (usually while the tea is still hot from brewing), the mixture then being cooled with ice, is ubiquitous in the Southeastern United States. In these states, when "tea" is mentioned, it usually refers to sweetened iced tea. The unsweetened variant is often called "unsweet" tea instead of unsweetened or plain. The consumption of sweet tea with many meals leads to it sometimes called the "table wine of the South", and this trait is considered an important marker of the culture of the Southern United States. Southern sweet tea is made by brewing tea at double strength, adding a large amount of sugar to the freshly brewed hot tea, and diluting to the proper strength. It is served over a glass full of ice cubes and is often garnished with a slice of lemon. While high fructose corn syrup is commonly used as a sweetener for commercially manufactured tea, more often consumers are unaware of this, and when made at home, refined sugar is used. Other forms of iced sweet tea popular in the United States include iced tea with lemonade (commonly called an Arnold Palmer), iced tea lattes (with cow's milk or plant based milk), Bubble tea, and iced tea with some fruit flavoring. Some venues serve iced tea that has been pre-flavored with fruit essences, like passion fruit or peach. Iced tea is often prepared from bagged tea. In addition to tea bags and loose tea, powdered "instant iced tea mix" is available in stores. This is made by preparing tea and then dehydrating it, similar to instant coffee.
2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (also known as PhIP) is one of the most abundant heterocyclic amines (HCAs) found in cooked meat. PhIP is formed at high temperatures from the reaction between creatine or creatinine (found in muscle meats), amino acids, and sugar. PhIP formation increases with the temperature and duration of cooking and also depends on the method of cooking and the variety of meat being cooked. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program has declared PhIP as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen". International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of World Health Organization, has classified PhIP as IARC Group 2B carcinogen (i.e., possibly carcinogenic to humans). There is sufficient evidence in experimental animals, as well as in vitro models, for the carcinogenicity of PhIP.
During Mahathir's term, Mahathir maintained a collaborative relationship with the West, despite him being an outspoken critic and prioritised development models and collaboration from elsewhere in Asia. On his first day in office, Mahathir announced that his government would prioritise strengthening ties with neighbouring ASEAN countries, particularly through closer economic cooperation. He chose neighbouring Indonesia for his first official overseas visit. Early during his tenure, a small disagreement with the United Kingdom over university tuition fees led to a boycott of all British goods led by Mahathir, in what became known as the "Buy British Last" campaign. Mahathir successfully negotiated with Indonesian President Suharto to bring the 27-year Ligitan and Sipadan dispute with Indonesia to the International Court of Justice for resolution. In a shift from his predecessors, Mahathir frequently condemned Israel and ensured Malaysian support for the Palestine Liberation Organization, although he toned down his criticisms after the Oslo Accords were agreed. He has been internationally acclaimed as the voice of the developing world. As prime minister, Mahathir undertook numerous international visits to enhance diplomatic relations, promote trade, and gather insights on foreign nations. In 1987, he was elected as the president of the International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
=== September === 1 September – Labour MP Jas Athwal sacks the letting agent managing his properties after a BBC investigation found they were infested with mould and ants. John Swinney gives his keynote speech to the SNP Annual Conference, saying that he will put the "people's priorities" at the heard of the Scottish Government, and that he will work to convince voters that Scottish independence is the "route" to delivering a fairer and stronger country. 2024 Social Democratic and Labour Party leadership election: Claire Hanna, the MP for Belfast South and Mid Down, confirms her intention to run as SDLP leader. 2 September – 2024 Conservative Party leadership election: Kemi Badenoch launches her leadership campaign with a speech in central London during which she says the Conservatives need to "stop acting like Labour". Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn unites with four other independent MPs to create the Independent Alliance, a pro-Gaza group and the joint fifth largest group in Parliament. 3 September – The Medicines (Gonadotrophin-Releasing Hormone Analogues) (Emergency Prohibition) (England, Wales and Scotland) Order 2024 ceases to have effect. A leaked letter penned by Cabinet Secretary Simon Case describes the previous Conservative government's failure to hold a spending review in its final years in office as a contributing factor towards uncertainty over the state of public finances. Case also disputes the Conservative stance that Labour's allegation that they have inherited an economic "black hole" is bringing the civil service into disrepute.

The skeleton, where plutonium accumulates, and the liver, where it collects and becomes concentrated, are at risk. Plutonium is not absorbed into the body efficiently when ingested; only 0.04% of plutonium oxide is absorbed after ingestion. Plutonium absorbed by the body is excreted very slowly, with a biological half-life of 200 years. Plutonium passes only slowly through cell membranes and intestinal boundaries, so absorption by ingestion and incorporation into bone structure proceeds very slowly. Donald Mastick accidentally swallowed a small amount of plutonium(III) chloride, which was detectable for the next thirty years of his life, but appeared to suffer no ill effects. Plutonium is more dangerous if inhaled than if ingested. The risk of lung cancer increases once the total radiation dose equivalent of inhaled plutonium exceeds 400 mSv. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the lifetime cancer risk from inhaling 5,000 plutonium particles, each about 3 μm wide, is 1% over the background U.S. average. Ingestion or inhalation of large amounts may cause acute radiation poisoning and possibly death. However, no human being is known to have died because of inhaling or ingesting plutonium, and many people have measurable amounts of plutonium in their bodies. The "hot particle" theory in which a particle of plutonium dust irradiates a localized spot of lung tissue is not supported by mainstream research—such particles are more mobile than originally thought and toxicity is not measurably increased due to particulate form.
=== America, Iran, and Under Milk Wood, 1950–1953 === American poet John Brinnin invited Thomas to New York, where in February 1950 they embarked on a lucrative three-month tour of arts centres and campuses. The tour, which began in front of an audience of a thousand at the Kaufmann Auditorium of the Poetry Centre in New York, took in about 40 venues. During the tour, Thomas was invited to many parties and functions and on several occasions became drunk—going out of his way to shock people—and was a difficult guest. Thomas drank before some of his readings, though it is argued he may have pretended to be more affected by it than he actually was. The writer Elizabeth Hardwick recalled how intoxicating a performer he was and how the tension would build before a performance: "Would he arrive only to break down on the stage? Would some dismaying scene take place at the faculty party? Would he be offensive, violent, obscene?" Caitlin said in her memoir, "Nobody ever needed encouragement less, and he was drowned in it." On returning to Britain, Thomas began work on two further poems, "In the white giant's thigh", which he read on the Third Programme in September 1950, and the incomplete "In country heaven". In October, Thomas sent a draft of the first 39 pages of 'The Town That Was Mad' to the BBC. The task of seeing this work through to production as Under Milk Wood was assigned to the BBC's Douglas Cleverdon, who had been responsible for casting Thomas in 'Paradise Lost'.
New fossil material of a colugo and ungulates, possibly including the first known upper dentition of Pakkokuhyus lahirii, is described from the Eocene Pondaung Formation (Myanmar) by Ducrocq et al. (2026). He et al. (2026) date the mammalian assemblage from the Relu Basin in the Tibetan Plateau (China) to 39.2–38.1 million years ago, and find that the presence of this assemblage in the studied area coincided with a seasonal rainfall regime, climatic conditions with similarities to Mediterranean-type climate, and expansion of high-elevation subtropical forests. Evidence of impact of both regional climate changes (mid-Eocene aridification of Central Asia) and global ones (Paleocene–Eocene thermal maximum and cooling during the Eocene-Oligocene transition) on changes of composition of Paleogene mammal assemblages from Central Asia is presented by Benevento et al. (2026). A study on the species richness and morphological diversity of mammals from assemblages from the John Day Formation (Oregon, United States) is published by Peng & Famoso (2026), who find evidence of stronger relationship of sampling at sites from the studied formation with recorded taxonomic diversity than with morphological diversity. Revision of the composition of the assemblages of Neogene terrestrial mammals from the Chesapeake Group (Maryland and Virginia, United States) is published by Eshelman et al. (2026), who interpret the studied faunas as indicative of presence of a combination of forest and grassland habitats, with a gradual shift towards more forested environments. Arias-Concha et al.
M2 macrophages can remove cholesterol from blood vessels, but when the cholesterol is oxidized, the M2 macrophages become apoptotic foam cells contributing to the atheromatous plaque of atherosclerosis.
Fumarate, produced from the purine nucleotide cycle, is an intermediate of TCA cycle and enters the mitochondria by converting into malate and utilizing the malate shuttle where it is converted into oxaloacetic acid (OAA). During exercise, OAA either enters into TCA cycle or converts into aspartate in the mitochondria. As the purine nucleotide cycle produces ammonia (see below in ammonia synthesis), skeletal muscle needs to synthesize glutamate in a way that does not further increase ammonia, and as such the use of glutaminase to produce glutamate from glutamine would not be ideal. Also, plasma glutamine (released from the kidneys) requires active transport into the muscle cell (consuming ATP). Consequently, during exercise when the ATP reservoir is low (ADP>ATP), glutamate is produced from branch-chained amino acids (BCAAs) and α-ketoglutarate, as well as from alanine and α-ketoglutarate. Glutamate is then used to produce aspartate. The aspartate enters the purine nucleotide cycle, where it is used to convert IMP into S-AMP.

Sealed, protected from light, and refrigerated at two to eight degrees Celsius for most research material. Desiccated storage limits moisture uptake. Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.
Each cycle exposes the peptide to ice-liquid interfaces where unfolding and aggregation can occur. Aggregates may not redissolve and can alter measured activity. Aliquoting before the first freeze reduces the number of cycles any single portion experiences.
It usually reports purity by HPLC, identity by mass spectrometry, peptide content, appearance, and residual moisture or counterion content. The analytical method behind each value should be stated. Acceptance criteria are set by the supplier or the buyer's specification.
Different techniques detect different classes of impurities, so a single number does not describe a sample completely. Reversed-phase chromatography resolves related peptides well but can miss inorganic salts, while mass spectrometry confirms mass without quantifying everything present. Comparing results requires knowing which method was used and how it was validated.
